I believe that Lego’s new Monster Fighters line is one of their most creative set series to date. As I noted in my previous Monster Fighters post, it is essentially the adventurers with steampunk robotic body parts attacking classic monsters in an apocalyptic world.

My Opinions: Considering the set runs at $7 and has a rad swamp monster, his little encampment, and a monster fighter on a little swamp boat, it’s a good value (in my opinion) and shouldn’t be missed.

My Opinions: The monster in this set, the mummy, is virtually identical to the collectible minifigure mummy. However, the girl monster fighter in this set is quite epic as well as her vehicle, which reminds me a lot of the adventurers mini helicopter set… ah memories…

My Opinions: I think this may be Lego’s most inventive set ever. As I wrote in my previous post:

And yes, that is a guy in a suit wearing a bowler hat with a robotic leg wielding a musketeer sword riding a motorcycle attacking a vampire riding a hot rod with a chauffeur.

And now, in the final version, his motorcycle has dynamite and flames. Can you get much more epic?

Hooray my friends! Community will be returning on Thursday, March 15th at 8:00!

Though I’m overjoyed to see them return, I find it very annoying that it, once again, will be airing opposite The Big Bang Theory. It is now known that Big Bang Theory kills whatever show(s) go opposite it. Recently, during Community’s hiatus, the ever popular 30 Rock went on at 8:00 and bombed in the ratings. However, if anyone can challenge Dr. Sheldon Cooper, it would most certainly be Mr. Abed Nadir.

Tomorrow Nintendo will be showing off 3 different Nintendo Direct’s (prerecorded vids with tons of news directly from Satoru Iwata and Reggie Fils-Aime), one for Japan at 3:00 a.m PST with Iwata here, one for the UK at 4:00 a.m. PST here, and one for the US at 6:00 a.m. with Reggie here.

So far, quite a nice selection of news has come out of these events. I wonder what we will see this time?

The Lego Star Wars line debuted some great sets at the New York Toy Fair (Lego also renewed their license with Lucas for 10 more years of Lego Star Wars!). Although most of these are terrifyingly overpriced, there are some real amazing sets here.

My Opinions: One of the two new sets based off the Star Wars: The Old Republic games. I’m not familiar with too much of the extended universe (other than the Force Unleashed games), so I cannot tell you how accurate it is. What I can tell you is that it is a really cool starship with quite a few excellent characters.

9498 Saesee Tiin’s Jedi Starfighter

My Opinions: Sasesee Tiin was one of my favorite Jedi in the Clone Wars show (SPOILER: Why did they have to kill him?!?) and his minifig is super awesome. The ship is the same (or nearly the same) Jedi ship as the boatload of other Jedi ships Lego has made, just in a different color.

Me and my awesome uncle, Andy Baio, have just launched a website together. We call it, Playfic.

What is it you ask? Well, Playfic is a community for writing, sharing, and playing interactive fiction games (aka “text adventures”) entirely from your browser, using a “natural language”-inspired language called Inform 7.

Inform 7 is incredibly awesome and weird. For example, this is a fully functional game:

East of the Garden is the Gazebo. Above is the Treehouse. A billiards table is in the Gazebo. On it is a trophy cup. A starting pistol is in the cup. In the Treehouse is a container called a cardboard box.

Type that into Playfic, and you end up with this simple game, ready to send to the world.

The official documentation is extensive, with a great manual and recipe book. We’ve collected a list of resources to help you get started.

For now, there’s very little documentation on Playfic itself, but you can click the “View game source” link on every game to see how it was made, and I’m adding sample games from the official Inform 7 Recipe Book.

My hope is that Playfic opens up the world of interactive fiction to a much wider audience — young writers, fanfic authors, and culture remixers of all ages.

While the language can be tricky, building simple games is surprisingly easy. I had never coded anything or made a game before using Playfic, and within 30 minutes of futzing around, I had made my first game.

Unlike the lackluster Marvel sets, Lego (in my opinion) killed with the Lord of the Rings line. Every set is designed with perfection as it’s goal and wonder as it’s result. I’m awed.

My Opinions: Considering it’s the smallest set in the Lord of the Rings line and it’s the only set as of yet to come with Gandalf, Lego did a great job with this set.

My Opinions: Right now, Gollum and Sam are exclusive to this set, and my is this set impressive! With stellar pricing and adorably awful excellent Gollum, and having it also being one of only two ways to get the ring right now, this is one set Lego and Lord of the Ring’s fans won’t want to miss!

My Opinions: Made as an extension of The Battle of Helms Deep, this set contains exclusively Eomer and a guard. A nice battle pack and a well made set, but not too eventful.

My Opinions: Very similar in style to the Dwarf’s Mine from the Castle line a few years ago. Really good-looking structure and a nice parts pack for those who want to build a massive orc army. Decent pricing too.

9472 Attack on Weathertop

My Opinions: So far, the only set with Merry and the Nazgul and, besides the Battle of Helms Deep, the only way to catch Aragorn. The set itself is quite a nice mountain that opens to reveal a room inside. The only thing not great about this set is it’s price. At about $0.14 a brick, even with the new horses and the spiral staircase, that is a hard price to swallow.

9473 The Mines of Moria

My Opinions: Currently, this is the only set to obtain Legolas, Boromir, and Pippin, which makes this already awesome set incredibly drool worthy. Not to mention that, besides The Battle of Helms Deep, this is the only way to get Gimli. The set holds it’s own with it’s piece number and price and has quite the nice array of building fixtures (plus a Cave Troll). Quite incredibly epic if you ask me.

9474 The Battle of Helms Deep

My Opinions: This MASSIVE castle contains exclusively King Theoden and Haldir, but also comes with a selection of other nice figs including Aragorn, Gimli, and 4 Uruk Hai. The set has a dining hall, exploding side door, and an adorable little catapult for which can be used to hurl Gimli at the orcs.
