Lego Monster Fighters Sets from New York Toy Fair 2012

February 24, 2012

I believe that Lego’s new Monster Fighters line is one of their most creative set series to date. As I noted in my previous Monster Fighters post, it is essentially the adventurers with steampunk robotic body parts attacking classic monsters in an apocalyptic world.

9461 The Swamp Creature

Price: $6.99

Piece Number: 70

Available: In August

My Opinions: Considering the set runs at $7 and has a rad swamp monster, his little encampment, and a monster fighter on a little swamp boat, it’s a good value (in my opinion) and shouldn’t be missed.

9462 Mummy

Price: $11.99

Piece Number: 90

Available: In August

My Opinions: The monster in this set, the mummy, is virtually identical to the collectible minifigure mummy. However, the girl monster fighter in this set is quite epic as well as her vehicle, which reminds me a lot of the adventurers mini helicopter set… ah memories…

(no other media)

9463 The Werewolf

Price: $19.99

Piece Number: 243

Available: In August

My Opinions: Considering how awesome that wolf, that guy who looks a lot like a beat up Dr. Kilroy (ah… more memories), and that excellent price per part that far exceeds the golden ratio, this is an excellent set.

9464 The Vampire Hearse

Price: $34.99

Piece Number: 314

Available: In August

My Opinions: I think this may be Lego’s most inventive set ever. As I wrote in my previous post:

And yes, that is a guy in a suit wearing a bowler hat with a robotic leg wielding a musketeer sword riding a motorcycle attacking a vampire riding a hot rod with a chauffeur.

And now, in the final version, his motorcycle has dynamite and flames. Can you get much more epic?

9466 The Mad Professor and His Monster

Price: $49.99

Piece Number: 427

Available: In August

My Opinions: A frankenstein set with bowler hat/robotic leg man and robotic eye/Dr. Kilroy on some classic car souped up with a bunch of weapons designed to take down a mad doctors lab? Hell yes.

9467 The Ghost Train

Price: $79.99

Piece Number: 741

Available: In August

My Opinions: A flying ghost train with bat wings and a Monster Fighters plane being used to board it! Check out those new ghost minifigures!

9468 Vampire Castle

Price: $99.99

Piece Number: 949

Available: In August

My Opinions: This monstrous Vampire castle is full of fantastic characters and gruesome traps all laid out in an epic package of epicness.

Lego-ized Animation of Some of 2011’s Biggest Games

February 23, 2012

Created by Alex Kobbs for the 15th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards, this three-minute bit of Lego stop-motion opened the show. The montage covers 15 games and took about three months to complete. Check out this awesome making of video here.

Community Returns March 15th!

February 21, 2012

Hooray my friends! Community will be returning on Thursday, March 15th at 8:00!

Though I’m overjoyed to see them return, I find it very annoying that it, once again, will be airing opposite The Big Bang Theory. It is now known that Big Bang Theory kills whatever show(s) go opposite it. Recently, during Community’s hiatus, the ever popular 30 Rock went on at 8:00 and bombed in the ratings. However, if anyone can challenge Dr. Sheldon Cooper, it would most certainly be Mr. Abed Nadir.

New Nintendo Direct Airing Tomorrow

February 21, 2012

Tomorrow Nintendo will be showing off 3 different Nintendo Direct’s (prerecorded vids with tons of news directly from Satoru Iwata and Reggie Fils-Aime), one for Japan at 3:00 a.m PST with Iwata here, one for the UK at 4:00 a.m. PST here, and one for the US at 6:00 a.m. with Reggie here.

So far, quite a nice selection of news has come out of these events. I wonder what we will see this time?

Lego Star Wars Sets from New York Toy Fair 2012

February 21, 2012

The Lego Star Wars line debuted some great sets at the New York Toy Fair (Lego also renewed their license with Lucas for 10 more years of Lego Star Wars!). Although most of these are terrifyingly overpriced, there are some real amazing sets here.

9496 Desert Skiff

Price: $24.99

Piece Number: 213

Available: In August

My Opinions: My favorite set in the new line. With a pretty grand price per part for Star Wars, and a selection of KILLER characters (Boba Fett, Lando Calrissian, and Luke in Jedi garb!) this one is on the top of my list.

9497 Republic Striker-class Starfighter

Price: $44.99

Piece Number: 376

Available: In August

My Opinions: One of the two new sets based off the Star Wars: The Old Republic games. I’m not familiar with too much of the extended universe (other than the Force Unleashed games), so I cannot tell you how accurate it is. What I can tell you is that it is a really cool starship with quite a few excellent characters.

9498 Saesee Tiin’s Jedi Starfighter

Price: $29.99

Piece Number: 244

Available: In August

My Opinions: Sasesee Tiin was one of my favorite Jedi in the Clone Wars show (SPOILER: Why did they have to kill him?!?) and his minifig is super awesome. The ship is the same (or nearly the same) Jedi ship as the boatload of other Jedi ships Lego has made, just in a different color.

9499 Gungan Sub

Price: $69.99

Piece Number: 465

Available: In August

My Opinions: Known to Lego and Star Wars fans not as the Gungan Sub, but as the set to include Queen Amidala! Yes folks, this is the first time Queen Amidala has ever appeared in a Lego set. All will buy this entirely for her, even if the set itself it stupidly overpriced.

9500 Sith Fury-class Interceptor

Price: $89.99

Piece Number: 748

Available: In August

My Opinions: The other of the two sets based off Star Wars: The Old Republic, this one contains some utterly fantastic minifigs who get to ride in an awesome Sith ship! Yay!

9525 Pre Vizla’s Mandalorian Fighter

Price: $39.99

Piece Number: N/A

Available: In August only at Target

My Opinions: I have not seen this ship in action, though I can tell you now that it’s quite epic. What a nice pointed nose and what cool positionable wings.

9509 Star Wars Advent Calendar

Price: $39.99

Piece Number: 234

Available: In September

My Opinions: So who would lead the charge following Santa Yoda in the line of gift givers from a galaxy far far away? Why, Darth Maul of course! And he’s even brought you a little R2 snowman. How kind of him. Though I’m not sure how comfortable you are with a sith lord coming down your chimney…

9515 The Malevolence

Price: $119.99

Piece Number: 1,101

Available: In August

My Opinions: Grevious’s flagship during the Clone Wars, while terribly off scale, looks incredibly epic with a very comfortable price per part and a cast of characters worthy of kings.

9516 Jabba’s Palace

Price: $119.99

Piece Number: 717

Available: In August

My Opinions: Wowzers! What a cool set! Even though that part number is so low, the pieces are big enough to justify purchasing this set… right? New molds for a bunch of figs, and a cast worthy of gods (not kings mind you. That was the previous set).

9677 X-wing Starfighter & Yavin 4

Price: $9.99

Piece Number: 77

Available: In August

My Opinions: Yet another micro X-wing. Very cute!

9678 Twin-Pod Cloud Car & Bespin

Price: $9.99

Piece Number: 78

Available: In August

My Opinions: Ooh! Mini cloud car! Now your micro Bespin can have official transport!

9679 AT-ST & Endor

Price: $9.99

Piece Number: 65

Available: In August

My Opinions: We all need a mini AT-ST and model of Endor don’t we?
