OUYA: A New Kind of Video Game Console Kickstarter Project

July 11, 2012

Were you aware that there was some serious disruption at the core of big corporate gaming? Earlier today, the OUYA video game console project launched. Less than 24 hours later, they have raised over $2,000,000 (over double their goal) making it the eighth Kickstarter project to reach over a million bucks and gave it the biggest first day for a Kickstarter project ever. What kind of project could get this kind of cash this quickly? A pretty darn spectacular one, that’s what.

The OUYA (pronounced OOO-Yah) is a supremely powerful, $99 dollar, HD, hacker friendly, Android based video game console that handles exclusively free-to-play games and is built with indie developers in mind. The controller is shiny with the standard selection of buttons (two analog sticks, d-pad, eight action buttons, a system button) and has a very special touch pad in the center (a touch screen without the screen). I would love to talk more about it, but you are better off just reading the Kickstarter page and watching the project video yourself.

Let me just say though what a game changer this could be. What the OUYA people were looking for was a sign from the gamers, from the indie developers, that change was needed and change was due. There is no question that they got the answer they were looking for – and in just a few short hours. I look forward to seeing the dollar number at the end of this Kickstarter project. I’m sure execs from Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft are currently paying close attention and shaking in their boots.

Indie Studio, Tomorrow Corporation Teases Their New Game – Little Inferno for Wii U and PC!

July 10, 2012

Sixteen months ago to the day, Kyle Gabler (2D Boy co-founder and creative force behind World of Goo), Kyle Gray (creator of Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure), and Allan Blomquist (Responsible for porting World of Goo to Wiiware) announced that they were teaming up to form the new indie studio Tomorrow Corporation.

Fast forward to present time and you will see them teasing their new game Little Inferno with the beautifully demented trailer above. Like World of Goo, you can just feel the John K. influenced insanity. And if you go onto the Little Inferno website, you will see that it’s also coming to the Wii U! The amount of brilliance that should ensue from this game might be painful to the general public and, you know, everyone else.

Shigeru Miyamoto on Angry Birds

April 12, 2012

This cracked me up today. The following comments come from Shigeru Miyamoto.

“There aren’t many games that I’ve played recently that have been truly convincing to me. But that said, I have very much enjoyed Angry Birds, especially the way in which it combines traditional and new game elements in exciting ways. Angry Birds is a very simple idea but it’s one of those games that I immediately appreciated when I first started playing, before wishing that I had been the one to come up with the idea first. I mean, obviously I want to be the one creating the most convincing, surprising game ideas.

In particular the control scheme is excellent. When you analyze it, the controls are actually quite fuzzy in terms of the way that it works. It takes a little while to get used to the controls, I think, but once you’ve mastered them, you have a lot of precision. To make it the interface and controls work that well and intuitively… well, I think a lot of work went into getting that right.

Obviously, if the developer had created the game for Nintendo DS the controls would have been even better, but what can you do?”

Apple Conference Officially Reveals New iPad!

March 7, 2012

I now want an iPad. I’ve been holding out on buying an iPad since the original was launched mainly because of it not having a retina display. I’d gotten so used to not being able to see pixels, that when I saw them I got angry and felt I was using old technology. I couldn’t justify spending $500+ dollars on an iPad with outdated technology.

Well now things have changed. Apple today announced the new iPad model with a number of new features, best of which is the built in retina display. The new screen now has four times the pixels seen in the iPad 2! Not only does it have that sheer accomplishment, the addition of a retina display also puts the iPad forward as having the highest quality screen on a mobile device and having a million more pixels than an HD TV.

Of course, retina display is not the only new addition to the iPad. Apple has also announced that it will be powered by a new processor, the Apple A5X, which features a dual-core CPU and quad-core graphics. On top of all the new graphical features, the iPad can now connect to the 4G LTE network for enhanced internet speed and has a 5MP iSight camera that also shoots 1080p HD video.

Hardware improvements for the new iPad were not the only things announced at today’s Apple conference. Apple also brought to light a new version of the Apple TV with 1080p HD graphics, iPhoto for iPad, and iOS 5.1 with some minor improvements.
